Tibullus uses quis instead of quibus in 1, 2, 55 and 1, 6, 13. In 1, 2, 55 quis must be considered an archaism that fits well with the magical language that characterizes vv. 55-56; in 1, 6, 13, on the other hand, quis is probably used by Tibullus to create another link between elegies 1, 2 and 1, 6. Moreover, the archaism quis adds a touch of pomposity to the speech of Tibullus’ praeceptor amoris, which is already characterized, in vv. 9-10, by emphatic elements

Abstract

Tibullus uses quis instead of quibus in 1, 2, 55 and 1, 6, 13. In 1, 2, 55 quis must be considered an archaism that fits well with the magical language that characterizes vv. 55-56; in 1, 6, 13, on the other hand, quis is probably used by Tibullus to create another link between elegies 1, 2 and 1, 6. Moreover, the archaism quis adds a touch of pomposity to the speech of Tibullus’ praeceptor amoris, which is already characterized, in vv. 9-10, by emphatic elements
