In accordance with a perspective that takes into account the evolution of the European novel form between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the present study focuses on an analysis of the narrative aspects related to the semantic sphere of food in El árbol de la ciencia of Pío Baroja and in La Regenta de Clarín. In both works, the nutritional processes that characterize the protagonists, Andrés Hurtado and Ana Ozores respectively, can be interpreted as outstanding textual mechanisms with which the Spanish novel explores new ways of representing the interiority of the characters, reflecting a complex, transformed reality. by social tensions and changes due to the slow development of modernization techniques.
