Extreme poverty identifies an area in which the marked deprivation of material resources is linked to social exclusion and marginality. The lack of a home and the absence of protective relationships are the distinctive traits of those who live on the streets. This article outlines briefly the policies to combat extreme poverty and the orientations of social work with the homeless, and illustrates the results of a study on the biographies of people in extreme poverty accommodated in social residential services. By typifying different life trajectories, it finally analyzes the impact of the measures, approaches and operational practices of public and private social services on the homeless people’s stories
