Becoming elderly while emigrating has always been a challenge for those directly affected, for their family members, whether they have also emigrated or remained in their home country, but also for their social environment and the respective social system. The text explores the topic and shows that the role and characteristics of aging are an important aspect among those defined by the culture of a society and can be an element of encounter (or clash) between different value systems. At the same time, these aspects have very concrete implications for social care practice and for the training of social and health professionals dealing with older migrants or citizens with a migrant background.

Diventare anziani in emigrazione rappresenta da sempre una sfida per i diretti protagonisti, per i familiari, anch’essi immigrati o rimasti in patria, ma anche per il loro intorno sociale e per il sistema di welfare di riferimento. Il testo esplora il tema, evidenziando come il ruolo e le caratteristiche dell’essere anziano sono un aspetto importante tra quelli definiti dalla cultura di una società, e possono rappresentare un elemento di incontro (o scontro) fra approcci valoriali diversi. Allo stesso tempo questi aspetti hanno una ricaduta assai concreta nelle pratiche di welfare, come pure nella formazione degli stessi operatori sociali e sanitari che interagiscono con migranti o cittadini anziani con background migratorio.
