Aim: To estimate the prevalence of dysphagia in hospitalized older patients and to investigate the association of this condition and related nutritional management on mortality and functional changes during hospital stay. Findings: Of the 3169 patients included in the study, 35.8% had dysphagia. Patients with dysphagia were burdened by a higher risk in-hospital mortality, especially patients on parenteral nutrition, and a lower probability of functional improvement. Message: Dysphagia is a very common condition in older patients and negatively affects their prognosis during in-hospital stay.
