Forests have been the focus of intense research activity based on various interpretative paradigms over the last forty years, starting with two monographic issues of Quaderni Storici. The image of forests conveyed by this research may therefore vary according to the methods employed in the investigations. Moreno and his scholars consider forests as an agro-silvo-pastoral system, conducting investigations characterised by the use of traditional documentary material as well as scientific tools such as pollen analysis and dendrochronology, and field surveys. Other, more traditional approaches are influenced by the specific interests of the scholars involved, meaning that research on forests may emphasise their economic significance, highlight the struggles between historical actors competing for the resource or focus on their cultural significance within a given society. In light of the extensive literature on the history of forests, this contribution seeks to reconstruct some of the historiographical approaches that have emerged in recent decades. It highlights the richness of these approaches and provides interpretative insights

Abstract
It highlights the richness of these approaches and provides interpretative insightsI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
