Abstract
An interpretation is proposed of the context that led to the first issues of the Magno- Graecan incuse coinages, and of their function in relation to the relations between Greeks and indigenous peoples in Southern Italy, starting with a review of the numismatic evidence, compared with the results of the more recent analyses of these relations proposed by archaeologists and historians. The clues offered by die-sequence studies lead to a dating of the first incuse coinages following the arrival of Pythagoras in Kroton and to the possibility that their shape and style were a sign of the influence of Pythagoreanism as the ideology of the aristocrats in power. Unlike the democrats, they advocated peaceful cooperation with the indigenous aristocrats, who were well-known exporters of metals, cavalry horses, and metallurgical products. The incuses, found mainly in indigenous territories, as in the hoard of Timpone della Motta di Francavillla Marittima 2022, are thought to have constituted a “prestige payment” from the aristocratic poleis to the indigenous Hellenized aristocracies for supplies received, also in accordance with Mauss’s “Gift Theory”.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
