The article examines the role of the Extraordinary Government Commissioner for Special Economic Zones (Sezs), introduced in Italy in 2017. It outlines the global diffusion of this industrial policy instrument and traces the main stages of its national evolution, highlighting the rationale for and limits of appointing Extraordinary Commissioners for Sez implementation. The paper underscores the tension between emergency-driven, centralized interventions and the long-term, place-based, and multilevel governance approach required for sustainable territorial and productive development.
