Starting from a reading of the French edition of the Institutiones Iustiniani (edited by J.-P. Coriat and Ph. Cocatre-Zilgien, Paris 2021), the author offers some considerations on the use of Gaius’ institutional commentarii as a model for the Imperial Manual, and on the characteristics of Pomponius’ enchiridion, a work that differs greatly from Gaius’ in structure and purpose. Some elements seem to bring the enchiridion closer to the interests and perspectives of the Justinian era; these can be seen not only in Pomponius’ style of exposition and argumentation, but also in his universalistic perspective – and therefore not strictly isagogical – which also pays attention to aspects related to the administration of the empire.

Abstract
Starting from a reading of the French edition of the Institutiones Iustiniani (edited by J.-P. Coriat and Ph. Cocatre-Zilgien, Paris 2021), the author offers some considerations on the use of Gaius’ institutional commentarii as a model for the Imperial Manual, and on the characteristics of Pomponius’ enchiridion, a work that differs greatly from Gaius’ in structure and purpose. Some elements seem to bring the enchiridion closer to the interests and perspectives of the Justinian era; these can be seen not only in Pomponius’ style of exposition and argumentation, but also in his universalistic perspective – and therefore not strictly isagogical – which also pays attention to aspects related to the administration of the empire.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
