Some similes of Apuleius’ Florida are notable for their rich literary reminiscences and are found at particularly significant points in the oratorical passages. Generally the images of the similes are very well harmonized with their context: for example, the eagle, whose flight reaches the heights from which lightning is born, when it swoops down on its prey is just like lightning; Marsyas, represented as a wild being, is like a bear on two legs.
