Why is it necessary to take Mandeville seriously, and try to escape from his deadly embrace? The idea of this article is based on a narrative that traps us, The Tale of the Bees by Bernard Mandeville, the one that seems to me to be the virtuosity of an illusionist in language. If Mandeville was right, we would be pawns of his own game, a game capable of immunizing its enemies by digesting them with their own criticisms. The idea that is needed is to criticize and overcome not so much the individual thesis of Mandeville, as well as his anthropology that coincides with that of modernity. It is necessary to address a pre-modern anthropology, that I seek in the Franciscan scholars: I propose that the charity, which in the Franciscan discourse was a directive of social relations, should not be understood as charity (theological virtue) or love (concept open to the distortions of individualism or moralism), but as a mildness, a concept which is opposed in a regulated manner to the aggression and to the envy, then to the code of vengeance and the device of contemporary capitalism.

Abstract
Why is it necessary to take Mandeville seriously, and try to escape from his deadly embrace? The idea of this article is based on a narrative that traps us, The Tale of the Bees by Bernard Mandeville, the one that seems to me to be the virtuosity of an illusionist in language. If Mandeville was right, we would be pawns of his own game, a game capable of immunizing its enemies by digesting them with their own criticisms. The idea that is needed is to criticize and overcome not so much the individual thesis of Mandeville, as well as his anthropology that coincides with that of modernity. It is necessary to address a pre-modern anthropology, that I seek in the Franciscan scholars: I propose that the charity, which in the Franciscan discourse was a directive of social relations, should not be understood as charity (theological virtue) or love (concept open to the distortions of individualism or moralism), but as a mildness, a concept which is opposed in a regulated manner to the aggression and to the envy, then to the code of vengeance and the device of contemporary capitalism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
