The paper analyzes some aspects of a diagnostic plan aimed to define an intervention on a monumental architec ture. Often these aspects are debated superficially within the cognitive process, but it’s exactly thanks the analysis provided by the diagnostic plan that the collection of all necessary data to the design of suitable interventions is performed, respecting the historical material. Therefore, a possible methodology of cognitive analysis to study some typical aspects of a diagnostic plan is proposed, as the territorial and historical contextualization of the complex, the architectural and typological analysis and, at the end, the characterization of the construction materials that is necessary to define projects of structural nature. The case study chosen is the monumental complex of St. Bernardino of Amantea (CS) that is one of the most important conventual architectures of Calabria.
